One of the most well known entrepreneurs in American history was the daughter of former African slaves in the south. Madam C.J. Walker was to be the first self made American woman to become a millionaire in history. Her story is awe-inspiring, up lifting and dignifying.
The self-made African American Millionairess and Philanthropist, the late, great Sarah Breedlove best known as Madam C.J. Walker's Mansion is located in Irvington, NY, in Westchester county 5 minutes away from Tarrytown. She was the first self made American millionairess ever in American history due to her hair care business. Our resident historian and director Kwame Christian was able to take a trip to the estate and tour the outside periphery of the property of the Walker estate called Villa Lewaro. The name of the estate is named after her daughter, Lelia Walker Robinson, thus getting the name Le-Wa-Ro.
"There is no royal flower-strewn path to success. And if there is, I have not found it, for if I have accomplished anything in life it is because I have been willing to work hard." Madame C. J. Walker
About 100 years ago Madam C.J. Walker built a 20,000-square-foot mansion built on the estate called 'Villa Lewaro' for $250,000 with her own money in Irvington, New York. The Mansion is in the same neighborhood of wealthy, well-known families like the Astors and the Rockerfellers to name to few and an estate own by a African-American was unheard of during this time. Madam Walker stipulated in her Will that after her death the estate would pass to her daughter then after her daughter's passing ownership of the Mansion would go to NAACP. The cost and upkeep of the estate proved too much for the organization to maintain so they chose to sell the property and subsequently it became a retirement home for the current private owners, the investment bankers Harold and his wife Helena Doley but now those same owners want to sell the estate themselves.
